When Allah Commands Us to Walk Away from Oppressors

Oppression is not taken lightly in Islam. Especially when it comes to the oppression of women.

When a woman is mistreated, dishonoured, disrespected, manipulated, or abused, it is not only a violation of her rights — it is a direct rebellion against what Allah has commanded.

In the Qur’ān, Allah condemns oppression repeatedly and warns of its consequences both in this world and the next.

“Indeed, He does not like the wrongdoers.”

Surah Āl-‘Imrān, verse 57

And when the one who wrongs continues without remorse

When they manipulate, silence, and shame

When they use religion to maintain control

Allah Himself cuts them off

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Indeed, Allah allows time for the oppressor. But when He seizes him, He does not let him escape.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari)

And in another narration, the Prophet ﷺ warns:

“Beware of the supplication of the one who is oppressed, for there is no barrier between it and Allah.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim)

And even more striking is this Hadith Qudsi, where Allah says:

“I will surely aid you, even if it is after some time. Whoever harms My wali (beloved servant), I have declared war upon him.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari)

There is also a narration in which the Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever severs the ties of kinship, Allah severs ties with him.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari)

This Hadith applies especially when someone continuously harms, oppresses, and manipulates a family member and uses that tie to keep power over them. When harm is done in the name of closeness, Allah does not reward the tie — He severs it.

So many women are taught that staying silent, enduring pain, and preserving the image of the relationship is righteous. But Islam does not honour oppression. It does not ask you to stay loyal to abuse.

“Do not incline toward the oppressors, lest the Fire touch you…”

Surah Hūd, verse 113

To incline is to make excuses

To stay when harm is ongoing

To allow your own soul to be destroyed to protect someone else’s ego

This is not what Allah asks of you

Allah is just. He hears what others mock. He sees the nights you cried in secret. He knows the ways your heart has been bruised behind closed doors. And He never turns away from the one who calls on Him while being wronged.

The Prophet ﷺ never hurt a woman

He never raised his voice with anger

He never used the Deen to control

He was the most gentle, the most present, and the most honouring of women

So when someone behaves in the opposite way

It is not prophetic

It is not piety

It is oppression

And if they do not stop

If they do not repent

Allah Himself will cut them off

Because He is never on the side of the oppressor

So walk away if you must

Protect your soul

Reclaim your voice

And know that you are not breaking a bond that Allah wants you to carry

You are walking toward His protection

His justice

His mercy

And that will always be better than staying in what He wants to remove you from

May Allah give every oppressed woman a way out

May He replace every pain with peace

And may He deal with every oppressor in His perfect justice

Ameen
