When Things Are Not Going Well: A Hidden Invitation

Sometimes when life feels heavy, when nothing seems to be going our way, and when doors appear to close one after another, it is easy to fall into frustration, sadness or even doubt. We start asking ourselves why things are not working out. But have you ever paused to consider that perhaps, within that struggle, there is a secret?

Perhaps Allah is inviting you to behave differently. To come closer to Him in a way you would not have if everything was easy and smooth. Perhaps He is polishing your character, refining your patience, deepening your trust and strengthening your relationship with Him.

When life is comfortable, it is easy to become forgetful. Our hearts can grow complacent. Our du’ā can become routine. But hardship wakes us up. It brings our heart back into conversation with Allah in a way comfort rarely does. It is as if Allah places you in a particular state, not to punish you, but because He wants a different version of you to emerge — a version that knows Him more intimately, relies on Him more sincerely, and loves Him more deeply.

Hardship forces sincerity. It teaches us humility. It pulls away the veils of illusion that we are self-sufficient. It reminds us of our ultimate need for Him.

Allah says in the Qur’ān:

“And We test you with evil and with good as trial; and to Us you will be returned.” (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:35)

Notice how Allah mentions both good and bad as a test. Both are ways in which He calls us back to Him.

When things are not going well, ask yourself:

• What is Allah teaching me here?

• How does He want me to respond?

• How can I use this to grow closer to Him?

• What qualities is He developing in me that comfort and ease would not have?

Maybe He wants you to learn a new kind of sabr you have not known before. Maybe He wants you to discover a new layer of tawakkul. Maybe He wants you to perfect your sincerity and make you realise that worship is not about conditions being perfect, but about your heart being true.

Whatever the reason, trust that there is goodness hidden in every difficult moment. And sometimes, the greatest gift hidden inside hardship is not the solution you are hoping for, but the transformation of your heart.

Keep turning to Him. Keep speaking to Him. Keep trusting Him.

Because every state He places you in is tailor-made for your soul to grow and your closeness to Him is the true success you are seeking.
