Allah Sends the Invitation, But We Must Open the Door

We often become confused when it comes to guidance.

We know that guidance is from Allah, so we make du’ā for ourselves and for the people we love. We cry for them. We ask Allah to soften hearts, to bring people closer to Him, to help them leave what is harmful and return to what is pleasing to Him.

But then months pass.

Sometimes years.

And when we do not see the changes we hoped for, we begin asking difficult questions.

“Why isn’t Allah answering my du’ā?”

“Why isn’t He guiding them?”

“Why am I still struggling?”

“Why are they still the same?”

Without realising it, we can become disappointed, not with people, but with Allah Himself.

Yet perhaps we need to understand guidance more deeply.

Yes, guidance is from Allah.

But Allah has also given human beings intelligence, awareness and free will. He constantly sends invitations towards Him through signs, reminders and opportunities, but we still have to choose whether we will accept those invitations.

Allah says in the Qur’ān:

“Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.”

SubhanAllah, this verse teaches us something profound.

Change is not something that is forced upon us.

A person must be willing to open the door.

Think about how many forms guidance can come in.

It may come through a conversation with a friend.

A reminder on social media.

A lecture.

A hardship.

A loss.

A moment of loneliness.

A verse of the Qur’ān that suddenly touches the heart.

A dream.

A child asking an innocent question.

Even the emptiness someone feels after chasing worldly things can itself be a form of guidance, inviting them back to Allah.

Allah sends signs far more often than we realise.

But not everyone chooses to respond.

Imagine someone standing outside your home, knocking repeatedly, while you keep your headphones on and refuse to answer the door.

The knocking is there.

The invitation is there.

But the person inside still has to decide to open the door.

Likewise, guidance is not absent simply because someone remains unchanged.

Sometimes the invitations from Allah are arriving every single day, but they are being ignored, postponed or resisted.

This understanding protects our hearts from blaming Allah.

Because Allah is not unjust.

Allah is not neglecting our du’ās.

Allah is not unaware of the tears we shed for ourselves and for those we love.

Rather, He is Al Hakeem, the Most Wise.

And He knows exactly how many opportunities, reminders and signs He is sending to each one of us.

Perhaps your husband has heard countless reminders.

Perhaps your child has witnessed beautiful examples.

Perhaps your sibling has felt many moments where their heart softened, only to push them away.

Perhaps your friend has received invitation after invitation, yet continues to choose differently.

And perhaps one day, after years of resisting, they will finally say yes to the guidance that has been surrounding them all along.

How many people only turned back to Allah after decades?

How many people spent years in heedlessness before one reminder changed everything?

How many hearts seemed impossible to reach, until Allah opened them at the perfect moment?

But perhaps we also need to turn this reflection towards ourselves.

Because it is easy to think about the guidance of others while forgetting that we, too, are in constant need of guidance.

How many reminders has Allah sent us?

How many times have we felt our hearts soften, only to delay acting upon it?

How many times have we heard a lecture, read a verse, experienced a hardship, felt regret after a sin, or sensed Allah calling us back to Him, yet continued to postpone the changes we know we need to make?

Perhaps we are waiting for guidance while guidance is already knocking on the door.

Perhaps we are asking Allah to change our circumstances while He is inviting us to change ourselves.

Perhaps we are praying for a stronger connection with Him while ignoring the opportunities He places before us every day.

Because guidance is not merely receiving signs.

It is recognising them.

It is accepting them.

It is being willing to change.

It is taking steps towards Allah when He invites us.

SubhanAllah, this verse is not only about others.

It is about us.

Because Allah’s invitations are everywhere.

The question is not always whether guidance is reaching us.

Sometimes the question is whether we are willing to respond.

So continue making du’ā.

Continue hoping.

Continue being a source of goodness.

Continue trusting Allah.

Pray for the people you love.

But also pray for yourself.

Ask Allah to help you recognise His signs.

Ask Him to make your heart receptive to His reminders.

Ask Him to make you among those who hear the invitation and answer it.

Because guidance is from Allah.

But every one of us must choose whether we will say yes to the One who is calling us back to Him.

And Allah never withholds goodness from those who sincerely seek Him.
