The Sunnah of Giving
The Sunnah of Giving
A quiet act with immense reward
Giving is a Sunnah that reflects the heart of the Prophet ﷺ, full of generosity, compassion, and sincere care for others. Whether it is wealth, food, time, love, or even a kind word, giving is part of the character of the Messenger ﷺ.
The Prophet ﷺ said,
“Exchange gifts, for it will increase love among you.”
(Bukhārī)
He ﷺ gave freely, not only to those in need but also to those he loved. To his family, companions, neighbours, and even those who harmed him. His giving was pure, expecting nothing in return except reward from Allah.
Forms of Giving in the Sunnah:
• Offering gifts, even small ones
• Feeding others
• Giving charity in secret and in public
• Helping someone in need
• Sharing knowledge or beneficial advice
• Spending on your family
• Donating your time, energy, or skills
• Saying a kind word or making du‘ā for someone
• Giving within the home to parents, spouse, children, and guests
• Giving love, gentleness, and emotional support
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Every day the sun rises, charity is due on every joint of a person…”
(Bukhārī, Muslim)
The act of giving is a daily opportunity to earn reward, bring joy, and purify your soul.
Benefits of Giving:

Allah says:
“Whatever you spend in the way of Allah, it will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.”
(Sūrah al-Baqarah 2:272)
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Protect yourself from the Hellfire even with half of a date.”
(Bukhārī)
Let your home be filled with giving.
Give even when you feel you have little. Give with love.
Give to your family, to strangers, to those who expect it and those who don’t.
Give in silence, for the sake of Allah alone.
On this Jumu‘ah, revive the Sunnah of giving.
Let your giving be hidden in sincerity, rich in reward, and full of barakah.
What is given for the sake of Allah will never be lost.
