Istikhara as a Way of Life
Many of us think of Istikhara only when facing a big decision such as marriage, moving to another country, or starting a business. Yet the reality is that Istikhara is not limited to life-changing choices. It is a Sunnah that the Prophet ﷺ taught us to apply in all matters, whether big or small.
The Prophet ﷺ guided his companions to seek Allah’s guidance in everything. He taught them to perform Istikhara for matters as simple as hiring a helper or deciding on travels. This shows us that Istikhara is not reserved for monumental decisions. Rather, it is a way of life, a habit of the heart that keeps us constantly connected to Allah in our choices.
The scholars of Fiqh have clarified that Istikhara is a Sunnah muakkadah, a strongly emphasised Sunnah. This does not mean it is something we can take lightly or brush aside. It means it is a practice that holds weight and consistency in the life of a believer.
When you train your heart to seek Allah before making a choice, you are teaching yourself humility. You are acknowledging that you do not see what lies ahead, but Allah does. You are stepping into a space of surrender, letting Allah guide you to what is best for your deen, your life, and your Hereafter.
Too often we turn to Allah only after things go wrong, when regret settles in. True wisdom is to pause before deciding, to turn to Allah while the choice is still open, and to ask Him to align your path with what brings you goodness and protection.
Istikhara is not about expecting a dream or waiting for a sign. It is about trusting that whatever unfolds after you sincerely pray is Allah’s answer to you. It is the deep belief that Allah will guide you, whether towards what you wanted or away from what you thought was best.
Make Istikhara a lifestyle. Seek Allah in the daily decisions, the small choices, and the subtle crossroads of life. In doing so, your heart will find ease, your steps will be steadier, and your trust in Allah will deepen with every decision you make.
