A Conversation Between Two Giants of This Ummah And a Legacy of Tawakkul
In the final moments of his life, ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd (RA), one of the greatest companions of the Prophet ﷺ and among the most knowledgeable in Qur’ān and Sunnah, was visited by ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān (RA), the third caliph of Islam.
What follows is not just a conversation between two noble men—it is a timeless reminder of faith, reliance on Allah, and the wealth that lies in the Qur’ān.
ʿUthmān (RA): “What are you suffering from?”
Ibn Masʿūd (RA): “From my sins.”
ʿUthmān (RA): “Do you desire anything?”
Ibn Masʿūd (RA): “Yes, Allah’s mercy.”
ʿUthmān (RA): “Shall I call a doctor for you?”
Ibn Masʿūd (RA): “It is the Doctor who has given me the ailment.”
ʿUthmān (RA): “May I send you an allowance from the public treasury?”
Ibn Masʿūd (RA): “I have no need for it.”
ʿUthmān (RA): “Please accept it. You are leaving behind daughters. It will help them.”
Ibn Masʿūd (RA): “You are worried about my daughters, that they must not suffer from poverty. I have no such worry, because I have instructed them to recite Sūrah al-Wāqiʿah every night. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
‘Whoever recites Sūrah al-Wāqiʿah every night will never suffer from poverty.’”
(Ibn Kathīr mentions this narration and supports it through various chains.)
SubḥānAllāh.
Imagine the heart of a man on his deathbed, not concerned about his wealth, his possessions, or his status—but fully at peace because he had left behind spiritual wealth for his daughters. He taught them a key of sustenance that would never run out—the recitation of Sūrah al-Wāqiʿah.
He didn’t leave them with gold or silver. He left them with tawakkul.
We often worry about how we’ll provide for our children. How they’ll survive in a world of inflation, instability, and uncertainty. But Ibn Masʿūd (RA) teaches us a powerful lesson:
If you give your children the Qur’ān, you have given them a treasure that cannot be stolen. If you teach them reliance on Allah, you’ve given them security that no market crash can affect.
Sūrah al-Wāqiʿah is a gift. A nightly habit of its recitation invites barakah, sustenance, and protection from poverty. And when done with sincerity and trust, it becomes a shield not just for you—but for your household.
Let the nights of your home be lit with the sound of Qur’ān. Even if your children don’t understand the words yet, they will feel its mercy. The frequency of the Qur’ān, its barakah, and its energy envelopes your home, creating unseen blessings that reach every heart under your roof.
Whether you’re alone or with your family, young or old, wealthy or struggling make the recitation of Sūrah al-Wāqiʿah a nightly gift you give yourself. Trust that Allah’s promise is true.
May Allah make the Qur’ān the spring of your heart and the light of your home.
May He place barakah in your rizq, protect you from poverty, and grant your children a deep love for His Book.
May you leave behind a legacy of īmān and Qur’ān that benefits generations after you.
Ameen.
